1 Your journal stays local
Saved sightings, notes, favorites, and photographs remain stored on your device. No account is required to use Jackpota.
2 Photos are sent to OpenAI to identify
When you choose to identify a bird, that single photo is sent to OpenAI for analysis. Identification requires an internet connection. Photos are not stored by us on any server.
3 Location is optional
Approximate location is only used, with your permission, to add context to an identification and to record where a sighting occurred. You can deny location access and still use the app.
4 No external bird database or cloud backup
Jackpota does not use a third-party bird database, cloud profile, or cloud backup in this version. Your data lives only on this device.
5 Anonymous install analytics
Jackpota uses AppsFlyer to understand how the app was discovered and installed. On iOS, you'll be asked for tracking permission first, and you can decline without losing any app functionality.
What we collect
- Photos you capture or select — used only for identification and stored locally in your journal.
- Approximate location — only if you grant permission, used to enrich a sighting record.
- No personal account data — Jackpota does not require sign-up, email, or any personal identifiers.
How we use your data
- Photos submitted for identification are sent to OpenAI's API solely to generate a species identification result.
- Your photos are never used for advertising, training, or shared with any third party other than OpenAI for the purpose of identification.
- All sighting records, notes, and favorites are stored locally on your device using on-device storage.
Third-party services
Jackpota uses OpenAI to process photos for bird identification. Please refer to OpenAI's privacy policy for details on how they handle data submitted through their API.
Jackpota also uses AppsFlyer, a mobile attribution and analytics service, to measure app installs and understand which channels bring people to Jackpota. AppsFlyer may collect device identifiers and general usage data as described in their privacy policy. This data is used only in aggregate for install measurement and is never used to advertise to you within Jackpota.
Permissions
- Camera — to photograph birds for identification and sightings.
- Photo Library — to select existing photos for identification.
- Location (When In Use) — optional, to add context to a sighting.
- App Tracking Transparency (iOS) — optional, lets us measure install attribution via AppsFlyer. Declining has no effect on app functionality.
Data retention & deletion
Since your journal is stored locally, uninstalling the app permanently deletes all sightings, notes, and photos. You may also delete individual sightings at any time from within the app.
Children's privacy
Jackpota is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated revision date.
